T-Mobile pins latest data breach on SIM swapping
T-Mobile still suffers from data violations, even though the latest headaches may better reflect the telephone business in general. The carrier has confirmed it to a computer bleeping that data violations have recently come from SIM swapping attacks. Intruders compromise “very small quantities” customers by re-assigning the SIM card or seeing “Limited” account info, T-Mobile said.
It is not clear what methods use attackers, but SIM swaps are often used to take control of an internet account and avoid authentication of two SMS-based factors. The attack sometimes rely on cheat or paying operator staff to make an exchange.
The provider said it “quickly corrects” problems using existing steps and taking further steps to protect the target. The company also argues that swaps are “general industry events.” While it’s true, it won’t help much of the victims – it can be long before the SIM swap attack is not practical.
